Talk Hard

My two favourite teen movies were actually released in my twenties. But they are still movies that I can watch over and over again, and they starred my heart-throb at the time, Christian Slater.

Heathers was a fun subversive movie featuring Christian Slater as JD and Winona Ryder as Veronica.

heathersThe Valley Girl talk was captured perfectly and the film introduced lots of very interesting phrases into my vocabulary including something interesting to do with a chainsaw, and ‘stick a fork in me, I’m done’.

I enjoyed seeing the clique of ‘Heathers’ getting knocked off one by one, but I can’t help wondering if the gun-happy JD influenced some of the high school tragedies later in America.

If you haven’t seen it, do. It has become a cult classic. Here is JD and Veronica’s first meeting, to give you the flavour of the movie:

Pump Up the Volume has to win the title of my absolute favourite teen film. Not only does it have Christian Slater carrying the film with lots of monologues, it is intelligent with a theme of giving a voice to teenagers. Plus it has the delicious Samantha Mathis with those gorgeous lips. (Okay going to stop right there before I get carried away. Here are a couple of pictures — judge for yourself):

Did this pair make a hot couple?

Of course their chemistry spilled off the screen and they dated for a while but Christian had a reputation for that.

Here’s the story: Mark moves to a new school and starts a pirate radio station with an secret on-air persona of Hard Harry. He quickly develops a cult following amongst his school mates, but Nora is determined to find out who he is. When the kids start acting up, rebelling against their teachers and parents and there are a couple suicides, supposedly under the influence of Hard Harry, the school takes action to shut him down.

Again, this is a well-written script and has a lot to say to both teens and adults about young people and their need to be heard. Check it out. You can pick it up in Target or Big W really cheap. And I think I might just have to watch it again.

Oh Christian, why did you become such a bad boy in real life?

Oh Samantha, why didn’t you stay a brunette?
